2015 marked the 125th anniversary of the opening of the National Museum of Ireland in 1890. This lecture will look at the events which led to the formation of the National Museum and its development as a national cultural institution down to the present day.

Please join us in the Burns Library's Irish Room for a beer and wine reception immediately following the lecture.


Raghnall Ó Floinn was appointed Director of the National Museum of Ireland in 2013. He joined the Museum in 1976 as Assistant Keeper in the Irish Antiquities Division.

A graduate of University College Dublin with an MA in Celtic Archaeology, he is a member of the Royal Irish Academy and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London. He is currently Chairman of the Council of National Cultural Institutions and a Vice Chairman of the Society for Medieval Archaeology, London.
