28th Massachusetts Regiment Drum
During the Battle of Fredericksburg, the famed Union Irish
Brigade made a futile, but daring charge against an impregnable
Confederate position at the Sunken Road. As a result, the unit lost
approximately half its members. On December 10, 1995, the Charitable
Irish Society of Boston donated to the park a drum used by this
esteemed brigade. The drum was used by the 28th Massachusetts
Infantry Regiment throughout the Civil War. At the conclusion of
hostilities, it is believed that the drum was taken home to Boston
by the unit's drummer, who then used it in a number of veteran's
parades. Eventually it ended up in a bank vault in Boston. It was
not until 1991 that it was again discovered. Luckily, for the park
the Charitable Irish Society felt that the drum should be on display
at Fredericksburg where it is now located.
